Teachers’ Instructional Quality and Their Explanation of Students’ Understanding

It is of interest to explain understanding, since the teacher’s most important task is to promote this in her students. To achieve this, the teacher must realistically assess her student’s previous understanding. To be able to plan her lessons, and to make allowance for the difficulties some students might have, it is important that she be able to explain to herself the extent to which understanding has taken place.
