ABSTRACT

A nonlinear soil-structure interaction analysis is presented in this chapter for seismic performance assessment of in-ground and underground structures (Figure 4.1). The key to the analysis is the nonlinear path-dependent constitutive modeling of RC, soil and their interface under reversed cyclic loads. For the main body of RC members, we can employ RC constitutive modeling and structural finite elements as discussed in Chapters 2 and 3. For localized deformation appearing around connections between members, we can use joint interface modeling, as discussed in Chapter 8. Here, soil foundation modeling and interface mechanics between RC and the connecting foundations are first discussed, although these are not the central topics of this book. Then, some examples of engineering application to the seismic performance assessment are presented.
