ABSTRACT

ART. 7.1. INTRODUCTION F o u n d a t i o n s pass the total load from a structure to the ground by direct contact. The load from the superstructure reaches the foundation by means of a number of individual members or units such as columns or walls, and it is the function of the foundation to distribute the load in such a manner that the ground is neither overstressed nor caused to settle more than the super structure can conveniently accommodate. The problem of foun dation design therefore requires a knowledge of the underlying ground, and the nature and requirements of the superstructure; also the effects that both the ground and the foundation have upon one another.
