N u m e r i c a l calculat ion of the c o m p o u n d c la im amount d.f. F using
(3.1.2) is often difficult and may stretch the capabilities of available
comput ing facilities. However , there are some important special
cases where the so-called recursion method can make the computa-
tions feasible, as w i l l be seen i n section 4.1. Otherwise, approximate
methods can be used to evaluate the d.f. F; these methods w i l l be
studied in section 4.2.
