ABSTRACT: EEL spectra were taken in various parts of individual carbon nanotubes produced in a HIP apparatus under nitrogen pressure with and without use of an iron catalyst. The fine structure of the carbon K-edge was investigated in conjunction with the π plasmon and π pre-plasmon (2-6 eV) loss region. A feature was detected at 3-4 eV for certain low-loss spectra that we ascribe to an interface plasmon. The results demonstrate that the low loss region provides supportive and complementary information to the ELNES, characteristic of the nanotube bandstructure.
