ABSTRACT

In selecting materials for designs, we can separate the products into two large categories:

1. The mundane components, machinery, standard automobile parts, containers, and so on, of the mature technologies: In most of these designs the person selecting materials selects those that have been used for years and have a proven record of satisfactory performance. But even for these established products, cost savings can often be made by switching to more recently developed materials whose properties have been well documented and certified by the producers. This is particularly true in the automobile industry, and perhaps these engineers are the most eager of those in the mature industries to risk

using relatively new materials and processes after careful materials evaluation and testing in prototype systems.
