ABSTRACT

Ionomers are polymers into which ionic groups have been introduced, usually at a concentration of up to 10-15 mol%, onto some of the monomeric units of the hydrocarbon macromolecular chains, or, in the case of telechelic polymers, at one or both of the chains ends [ 1-3]. Ionomers can be synthesized by copolymerization of one monomer with another that contains acrylic, methacrylic, sulfonic or other type of acid group, or they may be prepared directly from the homopolymer by chemical modifications. The acid groups, whether carboxylic or sulfonic, are subsequently neutralized, partially or fully, by the addition of appropriate neutralizing agents, such as metal hydroxides.
