ABSTRACT

MANHOLES are provided on sewers and drains as a means of access for inspection and testing, and for the clearance of any obstructions. On house drainage these chambers are generally referred to as inspection chambers. Except for very shallow drains and sewers of less than about I m depth to invert, all manholes should be of adequate dimensions for entry and for the operation of drain rods. A manhole should always be fitted with stepirons (or a ladder if very deep), for ease of both entry and exit.
