ABSTRACT

WORKS of sanitation are known to have existed in ancient times, and archaeologists have shown that drainage systems were in use in Roman cities over 2000 years ago. Despite this, there was really no effort to provide sanitation in the United Kingdom and other modern countries until the nineteenth century. The systems of sewerage as we now understand them have developed from experience gained only over the last 100 years or so.
