ABSTRACT

One of the most effective measures of managing the costs of workers’ compensation claims is modified duty, also known as restricted duty, transitional duty, early return to work, and light duty. Each of these terms reflects an employer’s effort to assist employees who suffer a work-related injury to return to gainful employment as soon as possible. It is a temporary position that an employee can fill when he or she is unable to perform regular job duties but can accomplish other productive tasks. Modified duty

assignments may be either a modified version of the injured employee’s regular job or a completely unrelated task or series of tasks.
