Abstract Human consumption of Lepidoptera, Isoptera, Orthoptera, and Formicidae in Africa is reviewed based on published literature and recent inquiries carried out at the author's request. This information is analyzed according to species diversity, ethnolinguistic groups concerned, chemical composition, as well as some ecological aspects such as caterpillar food plants, diversity of items eaten in termitaria, etc.
