ABSTRACT

In reality, most continuum mechanics problems have infinite degrees of freedom and frequently have complicated boundary conditions along with non-uniform material properties. By applying acceptable numerical procedures based on engineering principles, engineers are able to provide solutions to some of the most complex engineering systems. How to formulate the governing equilibrium equations of engineering systems and how to establish a solution are the objects of this chapter. The discussion will also provide a valuable basis for the presentation of the finite strip method in Part II.
