ABSTRACT

There i s a large amount o f literature relating to reconstruction followin g a disaster - some of the most interesting titles are show n in Appendix I - however, wor k concernin g the intermediate phase (i.e. the demolition phase) from relie f t o rehabilitation and reconstructio n has bee n lef t out . There i s very littl e informatio n o n emergency demolitio n for the purpos e of rescuin g people and demolition of concrete structur e for reconstruction. Thi s was very apparent followin g earthquake s i n Mexico 1985, Armeni a 1988, San Fransisco (Lom a Prieta 1989) , the Philippines (Luzon 1990 ) and Turkey (Erzincan 1992) where the rescue operation s as wel l a s the followin g sit e clearance operation s cause d numerou s problems and los s of time.
