ABSTRACT

Abstract The cropping patterns and marketing strategies observed in smallholder irrigation schemes in a variety of economic situations in Africa are reviewed. The constraints that farmers face in amending their farming decisions in response to changes in the marginal costs and returns of water are discussed. At farm level, rational decisions are often dominated by scarcity of factors other than water resulting in inefficient use of scarce water.
