ABSTRACT

The barrier properties of polyethylene might more precisely be termed its permeability properties, because polyethylene, in common with all other semicrystalline and glassy polymers, is permeable to some degree to most liquids, gases, and vapors. This said, it should be noted that the permeability of polyethylene to water is sufficiently low that it may effectively be considered to be impermeable on the relevant time scale. The barrier properties of polyethylene play an impor-
