ABSTRACT
The coefficients of a polynomial in one variable are symmetric functions of its roots. So are other quantities, like the discriminant of the polynomial. In this chapter, we will discuss symmetric polynomials and their basic properties. First, we briefly discuss polynomials in more than one variable.
