Soil and g ro u n d w a te r a t T erm inal 4 (th e In te rn a tio n al A rriva ls B u ild ing ) a t JF K In ternational A irp o rt in Jam aica, N e w Y o rk , are being rem ed ia ted u sin g soil v a p o r ex traction (S V E ) and air sparg ing (A S). T he areal ex ten t o f th e co n tam in a ted soil is es tim a ted to b e 70 acres, and th e vo lu m e o f co n tam in ated g ro u n d w a te r is e s tim a ted to b e 2.3 m illion gallons. T he rem ed ia tio n u se s 7 ,0 0 0 fee t o f h o rizo n ta l S V E (H S V E ) w ells and 13,000 fee t o f h o rizo n ta l A S (H A S ) w ells. B ased o n th e m onthly m on ito ring d ata , app ro x im ate ly 4 7 ,0 0 0 lbs o f vo la tile o rg an ic co m p o u n d s (V O C s) have been rem oved in th e ex tra c te d v ap o rs d u ring 18 m o n th s o f opera tio n . A pproxim ately 96% o f th e V O C s w ere b ran ch ed a lkanes and alkenes, cy c lohexane and m ethylated cyclohexanes, w hile 4 % w as B T E X . A ppro x im ate ly 3 5 2 ,0 0 0 lbs o f p e tro le u m h y d ro ca rb o n s h ave b een b io log ically ox id ized in th e sa tu ra te d and u nsa tu ra ted zones w ithin this period. G roundw ater m on ito ring d a ta sh o w a d ec rease in p H fro m 7 to as lo w as 4 in som e areas. N itrifica tio n w as su sp ec ted fo r th e decrease in pH. H ow ever, th e levels o f n itrite /n itra te a fte r 18 m o n th s o f rem ed ia tio n w e re to o lo w to su p p o rt th e possib ility o f n itrification . S ince su lfa te levels had in c reased d u rin g th e rem ed iation , it w as su sp ec ted th a t b io log ica l su lfur o x id a tio n m ay have caused th e decrease in pH . A nalyses d id n o t d e tec t th e p resen ce o f su lfur oxidizing bac teria . T h e d ec rease in p H is m o st likely d u e to th e chem ical o x id a tio n o f th e su lfides and iro n by th e oxygen fro m th e a ir sparging.
