ABSTRACT

A newborn male is transferred to your neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at 6 hours of age with a diagnosis of esophageal atresia (EA). The baby was born at 37 weeks of gestation by spontaneous vaginal delivery to a 32-year-old, G2P2, healthy Caucasian woman. The last fetal ultrasound, performed at 32 weeks of gestation, showed mild polyhydramnios, but no other suspicious anomalies. Shortly after birth, the baby's pharynx was suctioned for some excessive secretions. He started to cough and gag when put to the breast. An orogastric tube could not be advanced into the esophagus past 10–11 cm, and the x-ray shown in Figure 13.1 was taken.
