ABSTRACT

A newborn baby girl is transferred to your neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at approximately 12 hours of life with a diagnosis of rectovaginal fistula. Routine neonatal exam at the referring hospital showed no patent anus, and the baby passed meconium from the vaginal orifice during the exam. The baby was born at 39 weeks of gestation by spontaneous vaginal delivery to a 32-year-old, healthy, G2P2 woman. The mother had received prenatal care, including second and third trimester ultrasounds, which revealed no obvious anomalies.
