ABSTRACT

A previously healthy, 3-year-old boy presents to the emergency department with abdominal swelling noticed by the parents over 48 hours. He had fallen from a low-hanging swing after it had come to a stop earlier in the week, but had no complaints immediately after the fall. On evaluation by the emergency department physician, the patient is found to be generally well and in no distress. Vital signs are normal. A left-sided abdominal mass is noted with no bruising on the abdominal wall, as shown in Figure 53.1. There is some mild tenderness over the left lower chest and upper abdomen. A chest x-ray and abdominal ultrasound, as well as a complete blood count, are obtained by the emergency-department physician. The imaging is shown in Figure 53.2.
