ABSTRACT

A previously healthy 8-month-old boy is brought to the emergency department by his parents after they felt a hard, upper abdominal mass while giving him a bath. The child had demonstrated a decreased appetite and some lethargy over the previous week that was felt to be due to a viral syndrome. He was born at term by spontaneous vaginal delivery, and there is no other significant past medical or family history. The emergency department physician confirms the finding of a large upper abdominal mass and orders an ultrasound, shown in Figure 54.1. It demonstrates a large solid mass with some areas of cystic degeneration in the left lobe of the liver.
