INTRODUCTION

If the strength of ceramics were determined solely by the

stress necessary to separate planes of atoms, one would expect

ceramics to be very strong. However, high strength is observed

infrequently and only in special materials (Kelly, 1966). In

almost all cases, ceramics are weaker than otherwise expected

because flaws concentrate the applied stresses.
