ABSTRACT
As mentioned previously, low expansion glazes have been used
to strengthen ceramics since ancient times. Recently, glazes have
been used to improve the impact resistance of glass~ceramic cylinders intended for use in underwater vehicles for deep sub~ mergence (Conway, 1971). In the following sections, techniques
for strengthening modern ceramics by use of low expansion glazes
and by ion exchange of glazes are presented.
