ABSTRACT

Compared to most building types, research labs are expensive. The high unit costs of these facilities reflect architectural features such as casework and special finishes, as well as the environmental requirements for special equipment, HVAC, power, and other laboratory services. In addition, the dynamic nature of research demands flexibility in facility design responding to continuing change in occupancy and use. Consequently, planning for research laboratories requires a careful analysis of both space requirements and specific services needs for each space.
