ABSTRACT

This short chapter is intended to warn the drug abuser or potential drug abuser of hazards which might not ordinarily be considered. There is an important area of study which has not been discussed either by the public or by scientists as much as it should be: many occupations involve contact with other chemicals which can be more hazardous when exposed to while taking chemical substances. The importance of occupational exposures to carcinogens and other harmful chemicals is shown by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) regulations in Volume 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1910. These regulations place strict limits on exposures to potentially harmful chemicals in the workplace, often limiting the exposure to no more than a few parts per billion or even lower. Not considered is the fact that there are chemical substances which might increase the dan gers of exposure to industrial chemicals many times. In addition, these regulations are based upon healthy, nonimpaired workers. This chap ter will briefly warn of the hazards in using chemical substances in workplaces where other chemicals are being used.
