ABSTRACT
Once an individual has been identified as a substance abuser or being chemically dependent, the company has but two options: to ei ther assist or to dismiss the individual. It would be very easy to termi nate the individual and send the problem on to another company, but, the better alternative is to help that individual. Retention of a trained employee is generally in the company’s best interest since it is expen sive to recruit and train personnel. How could saving an employee be accomplished? The company could contract with a local mental health unit and send its employees there, or, it could establish an in-house “employee assistance program”.
