ABSTRACT

Once an individual has been identified as a substance abuser or being chemically dependent, the company has but two options: to ei­ ther assist or to dismiss the individual. It would be very easy to termi­ nate the individual and send the problem on to another company, but, the better alternative is to help that individual. Retention of a trained employee is generally in the company’s best interest since it is expen­ sive to recruit and train personnel. How could saving an employee be accomplished? The company could contract with a local mental health unit and send its employees there, or, it could establish an in-house “employee assistance program”.
