Since the introduction of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 1987 by Mouret et al1 laparoscopic surgery has been widely accepted and applied to a variety o f dis eases including malignant lesions. Laparoscopic procedures for benign lesions re duce pain and enhance early postoperative recovery compared to open surgery. Recently, more than 1,300 papers on laparoscopic surgery have been published in English literature, o f which 11% involved malignancy (Table 1.1). Although there have been many technical advances in surgery, the nature of cancer has not changed.
