receive lym ph flow from a prim ary tum or, and are therefore the initial nodes encountered by tum or cells metastasizing through lym phatic channels. In principle, the histological status o f the SLN s should accurately reflect regional nodal stage, thus perm itting avoidance o f form al lym phadenectom y in pathological node-nega­ tive (pN -) cancer patients and im proving selection o f patients for adjuvant therapy.1
