Medical Products, 16 gauge RW x 3/8"-l 7/8" with adjustable depth stop, but any other similar product is acceptable.)

7) Bone marrow biopsy needle (We use “J” type disposable, Manan Medical Products, 11 gauge RWx 4", but any other similar product is acceptable.)

8) 2-3 60 ml syringes 9) Preservative-free Heparin

10) Pressure dressing (There are a number of companies now selling bone marrow aspirate and biopsy kits that may be substituted for the above list of materials.)

D) Anatomic Considerations The best approach to access the marrow cavity is just inferior to the external

lip of the posterior, superior iliac crest, which is easily palpable in most pa­ tients. Care must be taken to avoid the sacro-iliac joint. The anterior iliac crest may also be utilized in patients who have been harvested recently, or whose posterior crests have been radiated as part of their treatment. The sternum may also be utilized, but is generally the last site chosen owing to the minimal depth of the marrow cavity in this site as well as the importance of, and rela­ tive ease of injuring underlying structures.
