ABSTRACT

Most frequently seen in the PB, but may also be appreciated in the BM aspirate

smear. Takes the form of: • Nuclear hyposegmentation or hypersegmentation • Abnormalities of cytoplasmic granulation

Hyposegmented granulocytes, either bilobed or unilobed, are commonly referred to as pseudo-Pelger-Huët cells. True Pelger-Huët anom aly is usually not identified for the first time in the same clinical setting as M DS: an older or elderly patient being worked up for persistent cytopenia(s). True Pelger-Huët anomaly is more uniform in appearance from cell to cell and is seen in virtually every neutrophil. Sometimes ring-form nuclei are seen in dysplastic granulocytes.
