ABSTRACT

In eukaryotes, the two last steps o f Coenzyme A biosynthesis are carried out by a bifunctional enzyme resulting from the fusion o f the two archaeal enzymes. PACE20 (COG4809) is an enzyme named ADP-specific phosphofructokinase which is involved in the glycolytic path way that is deviant from the classical Embden-Meyerhof pathway. This enzymatic activity was first discovered in the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus juriosus in 1994. The sequence information o f this tetrameric enzyme was described five years later.7 In eukaryotes, homologs are ADP-dependent glucokinase. In humans, this enzyme may play a role in glycolysis possibly during ischemic conditions.
