It is possible that other intracellular pathogens may also utilize the convergence of the ph agocytic and autophagic pathways for survival. The bacterial and mammalian signals that stimu late autophagy and promote residence of the pathogen within the permissive organelle have yet to be identified. A better understanding of these intracellular pathogens and their ability to traffic to autophagosomes will not only lead to their use as biological tools to study the regula tion and events of autophagy but also to further our knowledge of the mechanisms of patho genesis thereby advancing better therapeutics.
