ABSTRACT

RNA editing was originally believed to be a rare event occurring mosdy in organelles o f peculiar organisms. Advances in bioinformatics, the vast number o f transcript and genomic sequences, together with novel sequencing technologies, however, has led to a dramatic change o f this view. Today, RNA-editing has been reported in every kingdom o f life and has been shown to be very abundant process, significantly contributing to transcriptome diversity in many cases. Mechanisms o f RN A editing vary considerably, depending on the organismic group. In this chapter we give an overview on the machineries and mechanisms involved in RN A editing and substrate recognition.
