ABSTRACT

The use of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as sorbents in capillary electrophoresis (CE) and capillary electrochromatography (CEC) is an attractive way to combine the high selectivity offered by MIPs with the high separation efficiency (106 theoretical plates) and short time of analysis (a few minutes) typical of capillary electrophoresis. An over view of the methods proposed for derivatising the capillary column with MIP-stationary phases is given: from bulk polymerization of MIP direcdy in the capillary to the most recent micro-and nano-spheres of MIPs for filling the capillary. Examples of applications of imprinting technology applied to capillary electrophoresis are indicated and some future developments are discussed.
