ABSTRACT

Planaria, considered the ancestor of all Bilateria, including Vertebrates, represents the most primitive example of centralization and cephalization of the nervous system. A large body of research performed in the last decades suggest a strong conservation of the basic neuro chemical mechanisms during evolution. In particular, the flatworm nervous system employs a wide repertoire of neuroactive molecules, including the classical neurotransmitters and several peptides.
