ABSTRACT
This chapter will discuss approaches to reducing o r attenuating the effects o f allogeneic leukocytes o r soluble substances present in cellular b lood products.
All transfused b lood is filtered, as each b lood ad m in istra tion set contains an in-line filter (C hapter 7). This filter is com m only m ade o f nylon m esh an d serves the purpose o f rem oving any large clum ps o f cellular debris, o r clots, w hich form ed in the b lood p ro d u c t d u ring storage. This nylon m esh has a pore size o f 170-260μ (μ o r m icron is 10'6 m eter) an d therefore, will n o t retain single cells, sm all clum ps o f cells o r particu late m atter, w hich m ay arise from the degeneration o f cells d u r ing in v itro storage.
