ABSTRACT

Successful kidney transplantation in the twentieth century repre sented one of the most extraordinary advances in surgical sciences. Initial efforts concentrated on the technical aspects of the procedure, but it soon became very clear that consistent success would only be reached through a multidisciplinary approach. Surgeons, by neces sity, paired with nephrologists and immunologists to uncover the problems associated with rejection and medical complications of the transplanted organ and patient. Throughout the whole span of the previous century, many surgeons participated in the surgical devel opment of kidney transplantation.1'26 This writing emphasizes the historical evolution of living donor kidney transplantation, utilizing Herricks long-lasting live kidney transplant of 1954 at the Brigham as the pivotal event.
