ABSTRACT
Harvey Cushing (1869-1939) lived when scientific surgery began its extraordi nary development. He attended the best eastern American schools (Yale, Harvard, Hopkins) and committed his life to the study and improvement of the neurological surgical sciences. His extraordinary accomplishments leave no doubt Cushing should be considered the father of American neurosurgery.1
