Lung Cancer Surgical History Milton Anthony performed the first successful thoracotomy with lung resection
in 1821. The first pneumonectomy was performed by Sir William Macewen in 1895 with a later single stage pneumonectomy by Evarts Graham in 1933 for squa mous cell carcinoma.
