ABSTRACT

Glucose is a chemical substance derived from carbohydrates. By definition a carbohydrate is a compound which contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Different carbohydrates have different structure and different number of these three atoms. According to their structure carbohydrates have been classified into monosaccharide, disaccharide and polysaccharides. Monosaccharide, containing cyclically arranged 6 carbon, 12 hydrogen and 6 oxygen atoms (C 6H 12O6) are also referred as sugars (important to note that all carbohydrates or sugar are not sweet). Besides glucose, galactose (found in milk) and fructose (found in fruits) are important monosaccharides. Sucrose and lactose are disaccharides and cellulose and starch belong to polysaccharide group of carbohydrates. Certain sugars such as sucrose, lactose, fructose etc, when taken as food or via fruits (containing these sugars), in the body various enzymes biochemically convert these sugars from one form to other.
