ABSTRACT

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a betaherpesvirus with worldwide distribution. Although prevalence varies with geographi­ cal location and socioeconomic status,2"4 it has been estimated that 90% of the population has been exposed to this virus by age 60. Gen­ erally, CMV poses little threat to those indi­ viduals with a mature, competent immune system, with most infections resulting in mild or subclinical disease. However, for those individuals with compromised immunity, such as AIDS patients, cancer patients undergoing chem otherapy, or organ transplant recipients, CMV infection can lead to severe life-threatening complications such as pneumonitis, gastrointestinal mucosal ulceration, retinitis, and hepatitis, as well as
