ABSTRACT

However, if anyone can be said to have started the sequence of theoretical circumstances that eventually led to quantum theory, then that must be Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck.

15.2 PLANCK’S LIFE Max Planck’s family was steeped in the intellectual life; his paternal grandfather and great grandfather were professors of theology in Göttingen. His father, Johann Julius Wilhelm Planck, was a law professor, latterly in Munich where the family moved in 1867. Planck was born in 1858 to Johann and his second wife, Emma Patzig, the sixth child in the family (two of the other children being from his father’s rst marriage).
