ABSTRACT

System IDentification (SysID) is the term associated with the estimation and validation of mathematical models of physical phenomena from measured input-output data. Usually, SysID implies a general nonlinear dynamical system where the space/time evolution is governed by a poorly known mathematical model consisting of differential equations, integral equations or difference equations. Whereas algebraic “curve fitting” may be concerned with choosing a set of basis functions and estimating their coefficients, SysID frequently begins by fitting a system dynamical model solution (typically a differential, difference or integral equation model).
