ABSTRACT
According to Saint Benedict’s rule, ’“wine is not quite a monastic thing but it would be hard to convince the monks of it; thus, we have given our consent to their drinking it, in moderation.” Thanks to this precious support, the Cistercians allowed themselves to drink wine. A wise use, indeed because the stagnant waters of the marshes of Citeaux were far from healthy.
