ABSTRACT

ANTHROPOLOGICAL THEORY In the Volume 1, No.1 issue of Medical Anthropology Quarterly, Nancy Scheper Hughes and Margaret Lock wrote an article entitled Mindful body: a prolegomenon for [studies] in medical anthropology.1 In this paper, they outlined a systematic model for anthropological analysis based on the range of perspectives of the anthropological endeavor from micro-level perspective, through mid-level perspective, to macro level perspectives. They stated that, ‘The body is good to think with.’ This is consistent with their opening quotation by Marcel Mauss: ‘The body is the first and most useful tool of man.’ They explicate this range of analysis using the following three categories: 1. Individual Body. 2. Social Body. 3. Body Politic.
