ABSTRACT
A major surprise resulted from analysis of water immediately downstream from the adit outflow. ‘Total viable counts’ did not exceed 103 cfu/ml and there was a total disappearance of yellowpigmented bacteria, the microflora being dominated by white-pigmented, Gram-negative, rod shaped bacteria. Enzyme profiles obtained by the APIzym™ system suggested that these bacteria shared an identity with those of the adit outflow.
