He now presents to his doctor with jaundice and back pain, with some swelling of the lower limbs. On examination, a hard, immobile mass is felt in the upper abdomen, and eventually a diagnosis of carcinoma of the pancreas is made. i. Explain anatomically (a) the jaundice, (b) the back pain, (c) the swelling of the lower limbs. ii. Which peritoneal compartment lies between the pancreas and the posterior wall of the stomach? iii. What is the relationship of the superior mesenteric artery to the pancreas?
