ABSTRACT

The adrenal glands are paired retroperitoneal organs that lie within the perinephric fat, at the anterior, superior, and medial aspects of the kidneys. Each gland functionally consists of an outer cortex and inner medulla, which have distinct embryologic origins and produce different classes of hormones. The cortex mainly produces steroid hormones and is composed of three zones: • The outer zona glomerulosa synthesizes

aldosterone under the principal control of the renin-angiotensin system which in turn modulates both sodium and potassium homeostasis.
