ABSTRACT

Increasingly, surgical procedures are being used as separate OSCE stations in finals. Students should be aware of the common procedures that they are likely to be asked to perform during the OSCE, as these same procedures will also form the majority of clinical procedures they will be required to perform during their training as a junior doctor, starting with their FY1 year. Students often say the instrument station is meaningless, and they don’t see how it can even last the length of a standard five-minute OSCE station. However, some students may be offered more than one instrument in this station. Often the reason for this is that the candidate’s initial response was poor or minimal, and the examiner is simply trying to help the candidate score as many points as possible. Intravenous fluids are used to replace normal daily fluid requirements, for resuscitation purposes and for fluid challenges.
