ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how students would describe any common lump, then follows with features of the common lumps and bumps that they are likely to encounter on the body. The main point to consider when differentiating between a lipoma and a sebaceous cyst is its location in hair-bearing areas, its toothpaste-like discharge and the presence of a visible punctum (50%), which if found is virtually pathognomonic of a sebaceous cyst. Breast lumps are common; the majority (90%) are benign. Many patients present after having felt or noticed changes in the breast; the remaining are referred from screening services. Breast cancer is the commonest malignancy in the female population and hence of great clinical importance. Palpation is done with the patient in a supine position, the head supported with a pillow and both arms raised above the head to distribute the breast tissue more evenly for palpation.
